Haven't given up.

Well, it's time for an update, isn't it?

I'm not completely abandoning the whales all together, but......stick with me.

I am going to do something creative everyday, just not whales everyday.  I will be posting whales when I do them--I do have more ideas for them--it's just that I don't want to do them everyday.

Click this link to my original 365 Mosaics to read why.

Second Day One

Here she is.  Second Day One Whale.

I wrote on the paper first and then cut her out. Simple.  I think the toughest part of this challenge has been the photography side of it.

Day One Again

I have made a commitment to do 365 consecutive days of Whales.  It is officially on my 101 Things in 1001 Days list, so, if I miss a day, I will need to start over  from Day One.

I bought Noah Scalin's book, 365:  A Daily Creativity Journal to help me along.  I realize that he may not be the "originator" of the concept, but he is the one who inspired me.  Him, and the wonderful book Art & Fear.

I may miss a day or two of posting because of time constraints or lack of Internet access, however; I will post them as soon as I can.  Although I may not be able to post each day, I will still create a whale and document it. I better stop yapping so I can create my Second Day One whale.

iWhale

Geez, I can't believe how long it has been.  I have really missed a lot this week.

I have not given up on 365 consecutive whale days.

Here is my iWhale on my Kodak.  I'll take a better photo with my other camera.  Or better yet, I'll ask the photographer to take one for me.

Popcorn Whale

I know...I missed a couple days. I may just continue until I get 365 consecutive days.
But, I am wondering if one needs to be creative constantly, obsessively, for the sake of a goal...or maybe that is the idea.

Assembled from beach glass found in Tacoma, Washington.

Photoshop Doodle Whale

I was soooo trying to get this posted before midnight.  This IS my Tuesday Whale.
Don't the little doodles look like little whales too?

Nailwhal

Created from Objects in ex-manicurist basket.

Killer Whale

I think it is pretty killer, if I do say so myself.
Yea, I missed my deadline again. There is always tomrrow.

Fry Hopping Whale

Now, aren't I witty?!

I am glad that I didn't follow Noah on his initial journey because it would have been difficult for me to have faith that I came up with ideas all my own.  When I did my Kissing Tail Whale, I thought, 'I bet Noah never did a skull with lipstick!'  I don't want to know if he did, or maybe I do.

When I have a question about the project, I search for it online. Like I did about cheating.  I have perused his skulls when I just didn't have ideas for my whales.  Let me rephrase that, when I didn't have ideas that would let me complete my whale within deadline.

I am learning that I am more creative than I give myself credit for.

Alphabet Whale

Thanks Jaime for the alphabet idea. Yes, I am late on posting.  I did this about 10 minutes after my deadline, but.....I had a good excuse.  I was hanging out with my bestie for her 44th Birthday, she gets younger every year.

McHumpback Whale

Here is what Fluke of the Camera Whale started as.

I was going to hold on to this and also to the next one that I will post with tomorrow's whale. But, I thought, 'Wasn't that cheating?'  'But it's my project!'  'I make the rules.'

So, instead of arguing with myself, I went in search of an answer from Noah Scalin himself--he is who inspired me to embark on this journey. Here is what he said when asked about cheating:

I thought, 'what am I learning from this project?'  I knew what I was learning from my mosaic project.  It didn't take long for me to come up with an answer.  This project forces me to find something--anything to create a whale.  I have a self-imposed deadline of midnight.  I scramble most days to meet my deadline and usually under an hour. I know I skipped a couple days early this week, but it has bothered me every day since because I did do this to make a whale every day, and not 365.

I was incredibly stressed early this week, but I think if I had forced myself to spend an hour creating a whale, it might have relieved, or transferred LOL, the stress for that hour.   So I am recommitting to A Whale-a-Day not to miss any days.

Fluke of the Camera

This began as my McHumback Whale, but the Flash made it light up. I LOVE happy accidents.

Kissing Tail

I still count this as a Thursday whale.  I created it on Thursday and it is barely into Friday when I am posting.  Obviously there will be two whales on Friday.

I did this gray whale in honor of Mama, the Klamath River Whale who died on Tuesday.

Glass Whale

Do you see it?  Sometimes I see a humpback whale and sometimes I see a sperm whale.

This is a portion of a piece of stained glass that is gorgeous.  I was pondering using it in one of my mosaics for the mosaic-a-day project, but then I looked closer at the piece and I saw so much in it. I used photoshop to edit out the remainder of the image I saw in the glass because I intend to recreate it in a mosaic and don't want to reveal my vision until it is done.

Thingy Bobber Whale

Posted just in the nick of time!

This is not the whale I intended to post today.  I started a new mosaic that has a whale in it but I wasn't going to finish before midnight, so I whipped up this whale from odd treasures.

Good & Plenty Whale

So I was cleaning out my closet this weekend which is why no whales. Since I was cleaning out my closet I was going to do an M&M whale but I didn't want to buy them cuz I'd eat 'em so I used what was on hand.
Testing the mobile blog.

Oops

I missed two days in a row.  It is not so much having to think about what to create in terms of a whale, it is the idea that I will have to photograph it, load it into my computer, and then post the image on the blog.

I have to find a way to blog from my phone.  Take a picture and post.  There must be an app for that.

I will post my whale later.  Don't know what it will be yet, but there will be one today.

Sure, sure..I could have made it better, but I am hungry and just want to eat!

Sperm Whale

So, maybe parts of this blog are not going to be kid friendly--we have more ideas for sperm whales.  I say we, because my daughter came up with one too. Ever heard of Puppetry of the Penis? I went to a show with my bestie and her Mom several years ago, and it was a blast.  Anyway, I don't remember them doing a sperm whale, but I be they easily could.

I must say that I was a little conservative with this...in terms of how many squiglies I used.  I was worried that if I drew too many more, it wouldn't look good.  Have to do some more playing with this type of technique.

Wire Humpback Whale

Okay, first things first.  The Paper Beaked Whale blog was posted on August 2nd, so I don't know why it is labeled under the 1st. I did not miss a day, or do two on one day.  Just wanted that on the record.

I had to fight my kitty when I was making this because she absolutely loves wire.  When I was finished taking the pics, I gave it to her to play with.  She did for a minute.  I took the photo against a book that my Mom bought me when I was in my teens.  I really wanted this book, and it was expensive.  It has some gorgeous photography in it.

No inscription from my mother.  I guess she didn't write in books. I don't think I do either when I give them away, but I think I may start.

3 Whales

This one also counted as my mosaic for the day--Bonus!

I know that I could have used the elements in this mosaic to create three Whale a Day projects, but that is not the vision that was in my head.

The Inuit-type whale pendant has been traveling with my belongings since the Free Willy movie came out in VHS--waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it.

I've never really cared for the Inuit drawings of whales because I don't believe they capture a whales beauty, but I knew the piece had some artistic value.

I like it here.

Paper Beaked Whale

Cramped for time.  I used my fingers to shape this Baird's Beaked Whale.

When I was surfing the net today I came across a photo of a whale head that looked more like a dolphin than a whale.  The man standing next to the whale made me realize how huge this dolphin-looking whale was. (the link is different than the photo i saw today, but this was the closest I could find.  The photo I saw was much bloodier.)

When I was a kid, perusing my whale books, I was never much interested in the whales that looked like dolphins.  I wanted to see "whales".

I always knew that the Internet changed things, but today I felt the full scope of how positive it can be.  When I saw the photo of a cut off head of this dolphin-looking whale, I was interested in this whale for the first time.

When I first began tearing away at the paper, I was thinking Humpback, or at least some other baleen whale, but then I got the picture of the head of this beaked whale in my head and went with that.

Anyway......here it is.

Game Whale

I like doing the whales because it really gives a lot of room to find ways to create whales.

The whale from today is compliments of my best friend.  I was helping my nephew, Kyle, clean his room and a bag of game tiles made it into the donate pile.  Well, almost made it into the donate pile.  This bag was like gold to me and then I realized that his mother also is an artist.  So when I yelled to her in the other room about the tiles, she said, "those would be great for mosaic."  I better get to some garage sales. Or y'all can send me your game pieces.

I said, "for you or for me?"  She said, "me," meaning her.  Then she stood at the door and said, but you might as well grab your whale out of it first.

Thanks Jaime.  I can't wait to see what you pick for your 365 project. :)

The background is from one of my many whale books I have.  When I dug them out for this project, it was nice to read all the inscriptions that my loved ones had written in the books when they gave them to me as gifts.

Forca Whale

Okay.  My daughter Marisa came up with the Forca whale idea and I did the creating.  This had many versions, but I believe this one is best.  I attempted to fill in the dark parts of the whale, but I needed more forks.

There will most likely be a Forca whale 2 at some point.  There will certainly be a _ _ _ _ _ _  whale coming soon.

Surprising how difficult it can be to create curves with straight metal objects.  It was definitely more challenging than I thought it would be.

In the midst of brainstorming, I came up with a wonderful idea -- it will be fun to see what it develops into.

Crown Stamp Whale

This was actually supposed to be something different that I created in photoshop using stamps but it wasn't working out so I went to this.

Kind of fun!

#3 Girly Right Whale

Isn't she cute?  After looking at her, I got a great idea.  We'll see if it pans out tomorrow.

Penny Whale

Would be cool to do a hundred dollar bill whale, but pennies are all I got today.

Shell Whale

I figured that it would be easier to create a whale no matter where I am at and no matter how busy I am, so I am also taking up the challenge of whale a day along side my mosaic a day challenge.
